When support for 10 ends, it will be the last time I run Windows under my roof.
Tip if you’re shopping laptops: stay away from any newish ASUS models. Sadly ASUS seems to still think Linux is some ‘minor’ thing that doesn’t merit any support and they love making things a little custom…
I like my dual-screen Duo 2024, but the detachable keyboard and sound still aren’t properly supported. :(
My main rig is a custom build and my laptop is a 2016 ThinkPad. I’m already far too much of a nerd. The only proprietary system I’ll have left is my Mac for music, which, good luck getting a solid audio stack + Ableton Live running on Linux. I’ve tried.
I’ve been meaning to try out Reaper DAW under Linux on my old tower system when I (eventually) get set up again. I hope it might work well enough… then I can dump Windows on that machine entirely.
I’d guess many people probably can’t upgrade due to the Windows 11 hardware requirements, and the rest probably don’t want to because Windows 10 is fine and Windows 11 has a reputation for a lot of bullshit. Personally I’ll upgrade when I’m forced to due to lack of security updates.

Win 11 is a fucking usability nightmare.
I genuinely do not understand how non techie people are able to figure out what the hell to do. Why are the so many different option menus that are not even visually cohesive with one another 3? different ways to uninstall apps and sometimes one of the options does not work. To install some software you have to completely turn off anti-virus because it deletes the installed package before you can actually tell it that the thing you just installed is fine. They install what is effectively spyware on your system that tells you an imaginary way to turn it off.
Then you try to go the the forums for support and they seem to know even less about the system than you do. Or better yet they tell you something that can be uninstalled/disabled can not be because Microsoft doesn’t want people disabling the shit on their systems. So you finally have it uninstalled then the next fucking update reinstall the fucking malware onto your system because fuck you you don’t know what you want you pleb.

Is this really the best strategy? There will be a moment where there is a critical Win10 security issue discovered and that will be abused by bad actors in record time as there still will be millions of Win10 devices around there. So maybe try to upgrade before you’re forced to upgrade?
I said I was going to upgrade when Microsoft stops security updates for Win 10, so I’m not sure what you mean.

Oh, right. I figure I’ll upgrade at the beginning of October. I just built a new system capable of running Win11 last fall.
Upgrade in time before the official EOL, so they dont end up not fixing a new vulnerabilty because by the time they have the fix, the EOL might already be there.
In other words, dont trust the EOL date and be prepared before you are forced to upgrade.
