This is my favorite animated series ever, and I say that without hesitation. It is also a graphic novel adaptation, which too is absolutely excellent.

The series follows the adventures of the titular hero in two worlds: The real world and an alternate reality referred to as the Outback (presumably named metaphorically after the real Australian outback). In the real world, Maxx is a vagrant, a “homeless man living in a box”, while in the Outback, he is the powerful protector of the Jungle-Queen, who exists in the real world as Julie Winters, a freelance social worker who often bails Maxx out of jail. While Maxx is aware of the Outback, Julie is not, though it is integral to both of their stories.

I highly recommend this one. Here is a VHS rip of the whole series, which is a superb way to watch it.

Golden years of MTV animation. That and liquid television was just a mind bending shotgun blast of art.

I have the novels in storage, I’m now thinking of breaking them out for the first read in 14 years.

This takes me back. I’m gonna ride the nostalgia and plug Aeon Flux. I bought it on disc some time back and ripped it all to my Plex library. Animation was allowed to get really strange and pushed a lot of boundaries on MTV at the time. This was also the era of The State. Pour one out for that series; the discs couldn’t use any of the music that was key to some sketches because the rights didn’t transfer.
