Iraq’s government has been under pressure to expel the US since January 2020, when a US drone strike in Baghdad killed Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani and PMF leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. After the strike, the Iraqi parliament voted to expel US forces, but the US refused to leave.

Why do we need troops in Iraq when we have an ally like Israel in the area?

I thought the entire point of Israel is that US has a foothold in the region? Why do we have bases in Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Kuwait?

Probably something about not having all your eggs in one basket.

Yeah, but after a certain number of baskets, it turns from using baskets to store eggs, to using eggs to mark baskets.

Probably just cultural hegemony. American liberals see Israelis as “white” so they’ll back them to the hilt. Christian fascists see them as ushering in the end times. No president wants to be the one that lost that foothold in the ME. Probably a lot of people in power directly benefit from bribery or are at risk of losing a lot via blackmail. Like Bill Clinton was.

The current season of the In the Dark podcast is examining a likely-illegal mass killing in Haditha, Iraq, by USA marines in 2005. I recommend it to anyone who’s interested in serious investigative journalism.
