Well, it’s twelve days late and I only write these because I want to show off my latest haul! 😁
I decided to visit a town over and came away quite well-stocked today.
I recently picked up The Making of Gladiator book from a charity shop so I thought I’d better refresh my memory. Containing both the theatrical cut and the extended versions, this bluray was just £1.50 from CEX. It’s the 15th anniversary edition and that’s eight years ago!
The British Heart Foundation, who seem to price their Blu-rays a lot higher than DVDs, had A Quiet Place (£2.50), a film I love and was still sealed.
The Expendables 3 (£1.50), a film I was really disappointed with after loving the first two, was purchased as (a) I’m giving it a second chance and I love watching the bonus extras and (b) I already have the first two films so I have to complete the set. Yes, I know a fourth film is incoming.
Looper was the biggest bargain, 50p from the RSPCA. Another film I thought was alright but I can’t resist a cheap film and I’ll give it another chance. Lots of extras too.
Finally, I recently traded in all my duplicate Blu-rays from my favourite films that I have upgraded to 4K. I was surprised to get £19 in credit, so for an extra £3, I picked up Arrow Video’s Dune (4K).
It comes with a little book, replica lobby cards, poster and it still has the J card on the packaging. Luckily those awful CEX stickers came off without leaving a trace.
Finally, don’t go to the Blu-ray.com forums and check out their charity shop finds. People are finding sealed Criterion Blu-rays! Bloody hell!

Unstoppable DVD was new, bought from “RAREWAVES” for £4.51
The Core DVD was used (formerly rental disc), bought from “musicMagpie” for £4.74
Apollo 13 DVD was used, bought from “mommox co uk” for £4.36
Back To The Future Trilogy DVD box set was used, bought from “OnlineMusicFilmsGames” for £4.98I do not plan to buy from OMFG again. 2 of the DVD holders were broken off thanks to which the DVDs were free to move inside the box and got scratched up. The plastic bits were not inside meaning it was already broken when they packaged it. Definitely wouldn’t call that “Very Good”.
I was also meant to get 2001: A space Odyssey collector’s edition that was to include a Senitype film cell, but I got a refund with “Out of stock” :(
Currently on the way is Kursk: The last mission.
I’m a snob, after getting Blu-rays, I can’t go back to DVDs. 😆 I don’t hate them as I already have a collection in the several hundreds, mostly region 1 but I no longer have a region-free player.
Unstoppable is a cracking film and I think has been mostly missed by people which is a shame and don’t talk to me about Back to the Future, I’ve bought that trilogy at least three times over the years as technology keeps giving us improved formats to watch it on!
More eBay purchases.
Saw Layer Cake recently and loved it, so picked up the cheapest copy for a couple of quid.
On eBay, World of Books had a 3 for £7 deal, so I grabbed District 13 and its sequel which counts as one obviously, the brilliant Knives Out (2 hour making of) and the underrated Edge of Tomorrow. (No, it’s not called Live. Die. Repeat.)
I can never resist popping into a charity shop in the hunt for Blu-rays if I happen to be near one.
I don’t really have many yet but after being burnt one too many times by crappy streaming services or digital purchases that you don’t really own I’m just keeping an eye for deals on physical media instead.
I do inevitably digitise them for easy playback but I’ve always got the proper disc if I want to watch it (and to know that I actually own it)

UPDATE: There were too many blurays to trawl through and pretty much all of them were the usual trash I see in charity shops.
However, there’s a shop on eBay called the World of Books. They currently have 3 for £7 and there’s a much more interesting choice. I’ll post later. 😊
