What are your favorite board games? Me and my friends love playing board games, but I get the feeling their tired of playing the same things. What do you guys usually play? My favorite board game of all time is HeroQuest. I never get tired of playing it. Also love Catan, Arkham Horror, Betrayal House on the Hill, Spyfall (great at parties)
We’ve been playing Camel Up a lot. It’s nice because there is some skill and a good amount of luck involved, so no matter your board game experience, you have a shot at winning.
Agricola is my favorite but it is pretty complex so we don’t play much.
Went through an Agricola period. It’s so fun but brutal.
Some of our favorites are Catan, power grid, ticket to ride, azul, and bananagrams.
Ticket to Ride is so fun.
We play all the dune games at work. The new remake of 1978, done betrayal and dune imperium. And sometimes twilight imperium.
With friends we have bought spirit island, which is fun but really difficult. We also play dead of winter and some DND spinniof games. My mate works at a Games Store so he has lots of games i haven’t played yet. Oh and I’ve joined a poker home game.
My favourite is twilight imperium if we can ever find enough people who can spend their whole day playing a game.
You have (in my opinion) a great taste in games.
There’s nothing quite like a session of TI. It doesn’t get on the table a lot but the few times it does it’s amazing every time.Unfortunately I personally get to play big games all to seldom as I mostly play with my SO and she prefers them a bit lighter and with a bit less conflict. Viticulture is the one we fall back on alot of the time. It really is a great worker placement.
Castles of Burgundy is a new one in our collection but probably not new to a lot of people in the hobby. Really don’t know why I’ve not picked this up earlier because it is a really good game.
If we want to go for something fast we usually bring out Azul. No setup time and no teardown is a trait I value more now than I have in the past. Sure Gloomhaven is fun but the setup alone makes me want to cry.
If you haven’t tried it, I’d recommend Cascadia for a couples game. Also, Tuscany adds some pleasant complexity to Viticulture … Not that you were asking for recommends, I just couldn’t resist…
Tuscany is already in there and It really does make a good game great. 😁

GoTwilight Imperium, really? I only played it once and it was the longest, most boring experience. Each turn just takes an enormous time, almost as long as a Warhammer 40k turn and I played with 5 other players. When you were done with your turn you could go for a really long walk and when you came back you wondered how the hell they just finished 2 turns…
I really really enjoy boardgames, but not ones that take a weekend to play…
(this isn’t meant to insult you, I am just seriously wondering if my experience with it is a lot different than yours or if you like boardgames that you play an entire weekend)
My group can get a game of 4th edition finished in four to five hours. We are seasoned players, though. Twilight Imperium is both a strategically and tactically rich 4X game, which is why it’s one of my favorites.
That said, I am not opposed to long games. I recently played Fire in the Sky, which took me and my opponent 4 four-hour sessions to complete.
I look at it as no different than a campaign game such as Gloomhaven. Gloomhaven took my group two years to finish.
Well with gloomhaven its multiple clearly seperated missions though.
My limit is at about 4-5h with a game that I’ve never played before. If I played the game before the limit is at about 3h I’d say 🤔
I’ve been getting into Go/Baduk lately, it’s a shame how few people there are playing it in the US! Would love to play in-person instead of always online
Go is the most amazing game I know. I often regret not sticking with it as a kid. And IRL games are wonderful. The feeling of the stones on fingertips, the rattle of prisoners, the clicks and clacks when placing stones on the goban…
Magic Maze is a collaborative game that’s always fun. Everything is done in “silence” because you’re unable to consult with each other to escape the maze. Warning is that it could get quite chaotic
For several years we regularly played my roommates Battlestar Galactica Game. Sadly now I don’t have the group for board games anymore.
Unfortunately I don’t play as much as I use too, there are only 2 of us now, so mostly we play card games now. When the kids were still living at home - I think the Classic Clue board game was probably what we played the most. Risk, and Monopoly were also in the mix quite a bit.
My best friend and I used to play SubTerra when we hung out every weekend. Company that originally made it is sketchy for a number of reasons, but they’re also gone now and another company owns the games. It’s a tile based game where you are trying to escape a cave system with monsters in it and you create the board as you play. Each character has abilities to help this and there’s a turn limit you have to escape in. It can be really addicting.
I also really enjoy Campy Creatures and Space Park - they’re pretty simple games (same creators) that a great for a group of 3-5. Campy Creatures is a little bit like War, where each player gets a hand of monsters and the highest number wins. There are “people” cards laid out and winning lets you pick who you take, with the people having point values assigned (which is what ultimately determines the winner). Hopefully I explained it okay. Space Park is very different - the goal is to get 20 victory points, which are mostly earned by completing tasks. There are 6 “locations” you travel to which give you various resources to help you complete the tasks.
I also love playing Quiddler - it’s a fun word game, nothing super complex about it unless you play with people who make up words (we have a rule that half the table has to agree that it’s a word).
These come out a lot at my game nights, hopefully I did them justice with my descriptions.
Have you looked at the new Clank Catacombs? It has a map-reveal similar to Sub Terra. Aliens: Bug Hunt is another one if you are into the theme.

Gloomhaven came out at the perfect time in my life- after my party days but before my marriage/kid days. I had a friend group that would play at least one scenario per week, and sometimes we’d just spend an entire Sunday playing. That’s been my best experience so far.
I wish I could play Frosthaven with them but we’ve all moved away and I don’t have a group that would ever be consistent enough right now.
Machi Koro without a doubt! It’s like monopoly but it card game form.
Machi Koro is fun and it reminds me of another favorite I forgot: Space Base! I love stacking up those cards. The Shy Pluto expansion is pretty good too.
- I love pretty much everything by the “Italian Masters”: Newton, Lorenzo Il Magnifico, Grand Austria Hotel, Tzolk’in, Teotihuacan.
- Ascension is my favorite deckbuilder but like Clank, Tyrants of the Underdark, Dominion and Star Realms a lot too
- War Chest is my favorite “abstract”. It has randomness from the bag-building elemnt so not a true abstract but it fills that hole for me.
- Bunny Kingdom and It’s a Wonderful World for drafting.
- A Feast for Odin, Fields of Arle and Nova Luna are my favorite Uwes
- Mottainai is my favorite small deck card game. Or Sea Salt & Paper if in the mood for something lighter but still very cutthroat
I am bad at making lists so probably forgetting some of my very favorites.
Me and my SO plays Caracassone alot 😄 and me and my brother plays War of the ring when we manage to find time.

Secret Hitler if that counts as a board game. Otherwise it’s an obscure game called Ankh-Morpork. Really good asymmetrical game whether you are a Discworld fan or not.
