Legitimate point, that kind of applies to Lemmy here too. It’s not helpful to just dunk on Americans for being Americans. To beat fascism, we need to be allies.

You don’t actually hear that the whole nation “deserves” Trump very much. Probably because people that agree with collective, ethnic punishment tend to kind of like Trump anyway.

The comments being responded to were unfair and unrealistic, but aren’t going to alienate anyone who’s not an American organiser specifically.

The cheeseburger-fatso-school shooting stuff is what will do that, and we should avoid it. But, it’s not mentioned.

rather than pooh-poohing them for not being …performative (the “do a little dance” framing).

Which is ironic, because it felt pretty performative. Sure, you took OOP in good faith, that’s why they were publicly called out. You’re so noble and reasonable. This definitely isn’t a trick I’ve seen used before. /s

Exhibit A from a couple of days ago, with 12 upvotes right here in /c/canada:

until they remove their leader every American should be treated as an enemy. Because if he isnt dead they are all compliant.

Ah, you were responding to something specific. I could talk about other mutually exclusive attitudes I see more often, but that would be missing the point.

Okay sure, fair enough. Those kinds of comments are awful, to whatever degree they happen, which is not never. We all know there’s the same ideology here in Canada, so if someone picks a place they don’t live to blame it on, it’s near certain they just like blaming outsiders for things in general.

OP also reminds me more than a little of other toxic political people I’ve known, though, and I’m suspicious of her as an authority on what builds good relationships, international or otherwise.

Ok but that’s one little person, doesn’t mean the entirety of the country feels that way. You are literally reverse painting us with the very same brush that you are accusing us of painting you with. Or something like that.

Look, it’s pretty straight up. MAGA most of us disagree with. Their screamy supporters, most of us disagree with. Everyone else, can just keep on keeping on.

Nah man, I’m not attempting to paint us as anything, I’m just trying to remind us that we can be a bit …touchy (can’t blame us of course) and we should be gentle to our natural allies down south.
