It’s not really clear how much is backlash, and how much is just a failed totalitarian state leaving them uneducated and unrefined. They still tend to want state intervention in the economy, as well, which is why BSW is a thing - the exact opposite would be the former DDR voting for their Liberal (so libertarian for Americans) party.
