    Am I missing something, or do human-driven taxis have this exact same problem as well?

      The article says the difference is that the human drivers are “on call” self-employed contractors. Therefore not a ‘cost’ when not being used.

        Yes, but at least theoretically they should end up charging for their on call time. Maybe the corporation can externalise that cost, but if so it’s more of a business solution than a practical one and I doubt it’s sustainable.

        How many taxis to operate is still a interesting question, but I feel like there’s probably an existing best practice.
