I don’t think it’s bunk to say that many people join these types of communities to enact violent tendencies in a socially acceptable way. This is something that’s been seen before. For example, many Italian anarchists quickly jumped over to the fascists’ side when Mussolini came to power, and a common hypothesis as to why is that they initially joined the anarchists for a chance to commit violent acts in the name of revolution.
I also don’t think it’s far-fetched to say that it’s a good idea to keep these types of people at arm’s length, because it’s likely you won’t be able to rely on them when things start going south.
