But here is my two cents. I think the point of being in a romantic relationship with someone is to hang out with someone that you like and who likes you (and, you know, have sex if you’re into that). Really not much more to it than that.
You’re probably joking, but in the article it states that these people showed Xi around Iowa like 40 years ago when he was part of some farming committee. They left such a good impression on him that apparently they’ve stayed in touch. It’s really sweet honestly. In the article he says something like “to me, these people are america”

I don’t disagree but I still can’t help myself from enjoying Doctor Who.
But you’d think a time travelling alien would be a lot more terrified and saddened by the material conditions of the 20/21st century. The Doctor can travel time and space and thus would have seen the very best and most equitable systems sentient beings have ever created. The show definitely forwards a very hobbesian ideology in that even when humans / sentient beings have no scarcity, they still end up doing evil things because apparently sentient beings are inherently selfish and bad.
And I’m sure there is an argument that the doctor saving the day reflects a sort of “white man’s burden” discourse.
With all that said, i still think it’s one of the best sci-fi TV shows.

Did the vegan struggle sesh of (2020?) not have anything to do with the name change either? I remember this place was in shambles when that was happening, with all the brigading and what not. The name changed def coincided with with the mass ban wave of the time.

Bold to imply that Polanyi was not a Marxist. Certainly not an orthodox Marxist, to be fair. But due to McArthyism he had to use a lot of euphemisms for more explicitly Marxist terms (I remember reading that he had to live in Canada and commute into the USA to teach because his wife was a radical forbidden from entering the US).
Further, Polanyi’s concepts of embeddedness and the indeterminacy of capital became pivotal to the Marxist labour process theorist like Braverman and Burawoy. You can’t read a single Marxist anthropology paper without seeing Polanyi’s influence either, he is thoroughly a part of the Marxist anthro / soci canon.
Based off the comments on this post, I’m just now realizing that my experience has been pretty atypical. I’ve always had a better time working for local businesses, but I guess I’ve just been lucky.
For example, I’m working at a pizzeria right now and the owner will deliver pizzas or work in the kitchen pretty frequently. He pays us above min wage (not very common for a pizza job here) and makes sure tips are split evenly between foh and boh. It’s a much better environment than when I worked corporate fast food stuff. I find that working for a well liked local businesses can make working feel a bit less alienating. But again, I guess I’ve just been lucky with the jobs I’ve managed to land.
I live in a Canadian city with a horrendous landlord and rent affordability problem. Rest assured that many of us want these parasites dealt with.
Canadian online forums seem to always attract the most conservative Canadians.
