  • I’m moving at the moment. Linux Mint is a good stable Windows alternative, but I wanted to separate gaming from other things so I am dual booting. I have had luck with Pop_OS! before but recently had issues with a laptop WiFi adapter, had some issues getting Bazzite working, so ended up with CachyOS, which has been really slick and easy so far.

A nice thing with Linux is how easy it is to cycle through a few distros if you have your main files on a different drive or partition, since you don’t lose anything important when switching that way.

  • I have two and they have had endless connection issues. Also, the DAC in splitters is terrible, so this requires a USB-C splitter followed by an external DAC. It’s pretty unwieldy.

Also, on my previous phone without a jack the USB-C port started having charging issues after a couple of years due to wear. I’d be less annoyed about it if they had multiple USB-C ports, but a single port device is a bad idea in general.

  • There are a few things about Kodi that might help:

    1. There are themes thay completely change the UI, so it doesn’t have to be outdated. I use Arctic: Zephyr – Reloaded and it is much better, though I did change the noises to something else.
    2. The Jellyfin plugin works pretty seamlessly if you set up the UI correctly. I only use Kodi for Jellyfin and it acts as if it’s all local files, other than the occasional syncing notice.

However, I feel you on Netflix, YouTube, etc. - it is not ideal. I ended up either logging into a separate partition or moving to a Chromecast for those things. I’d love an all-in-one solution but I haven’t managed to find one that I’d be happy with.

  • That replies upon the definition of “mountain”, amongst other things, which has a consensus but isn’t something that is absolute. I agree that there is an objective nature to reality (though that can be argued too but I don’t see the value of doing so). I also agree with the opinion that Mt. Erebus exists because we are sharing an understanding of what is around us and agree on the evidence that comes from objective reality. However, you stating it makes it an opinion. It is an opinion based on evidence.

Personally, I think that there is an objective reality, but everything has to pass through our senses and understanding, so anything that filters out the other side is opinion. I don’t think facts are that absolute, but it’s a convenient way to say “this opinion has so much evidence to support it that I am confident it is true”, so calling things facts has value.

People (unfortunately) believe that things are facts without them being true, or due to them being a decent approximation, all the time. The thing that matters is the weight of evidence behind the opinion, as not all opinions are equal. I think that dismissing something as an opinion is silly, but dismissing one for lack of evidence or the fact it is subjective is valid.

  • I disagree but also agree with you — I think you and the quote are talking about slightly different things.

Facts do exist, but what you hear from others is still an opinion. Those opinions may align with facts or not, be better evidenced or less, but it is overwhelming evidence that allows us to confidently state a fact (and potentially still be wrong). I think he is correct because objective reality, while real, is observed through our imperfect understanding, senses, language, etc.

  • There’s the “right to choose” in England, which allows you to pick a private provider that the NHS will pay for. Wait lists are not short, and places often pause referrals, but wait times are months not years. You need your GP to do the referral and some don’t want to but they have to. Then there’s a bunch of problems with the shared care agreements not being accepted too.

It’s a lot to look into but it might get you there sooner. Ideologically I hate this as it is a waste of NHS money but for those that need the care in a timely manner it can be the only option. It is frustrating that there hasn’t been enough investment in the NHS.

  • Andy Demos on YouTube has a few Origin Effects demos that are good. I’ll admit to having bought a Chinese knockoff of one of their pedals because I wasn’t willing to spend that much on a compressor and it’s good enough that I’ll definitely buy a real one if I ever start gigging again (it’s one of the stacked ones).

You may know this but in case you don’t the Morning Glory is a modified Blues Breaker pedal, so you should be able to widen your search for alternatives with that.

The pedal brands I don’t think have good European alternatives are Empress, Chase Bliss, and Hologram Electronics because the digital side is strongly copyright protected, which unfortunately means less ability for builders to build on each other’s work. That said, there are still cool non-US pedals out there in that kinda space.
