Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I want to leave fb. Where is a similar place?English
2·7 days agoOh, uhhh, honestly I don’t remember exactly! I started setting up Friendica, and I ran into something that confused me, or it didn’t work correctly after setup. Tried Humhub, and it just worked, so started using it and didn’t look back.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I want to leave fb. Where is a similar place?English
9·8 days agoI run a humhub instance. It is very similar to fb from years ago. I cannot get anyone to use it though, just me posting for myself. I kinda use it a journal now, with pics and short paragraph or two about what I’ve been up to.
For group messages, I had a hard time getting people to move off of fb messenger. Tried good old text messaging, but everyone has iphones and can’t figure out the difference between I message and text. Also a few of them don’t even have a cell #, so they just can’t text.
I was successful in getting most of everyone over to signal, and I created accounts for my sister and her kids that don’t have phone #'s.
I use kijiji here in Canada, instead of marketplace. It had higher quality buyers and sellers anyway. Less annoying people.

6·8 days agoStardew Valley. My wife and I just started playing it together. It is a good time. Genuinely fantastic game.
I picked up gaming in 2022 (played all the Halo Games, Star Wars Fallen order and Survivor, Dark Souls) and she hasn’t played anything since childhood in the 90’s… We are both loving Stardew.

36·18 days agoI love Meshtastic. Had a nice convo with a stranger last night while I was LoRa wardriving to test out the range of my new rooftop antenna on my house.
Yeah, but depends on the person I guess. Its just so simple, and nice to set up without needing to do any backtracking or opt outs right out of the gate.
Arch or Debian. Depends on their personality and use case. I prefer Arch, but have no problems with recommending Debian and use it on one machine myself.
Edit: after re reading I’d say Debian. Little more stability but it is more annoying if they ever do wana tinker more. OpenSuse is an honorable mention as well!
Gnome is great! My go to… I don’t understand people sayin it uses too much ram. My 2011 macbook (has 4gb ram) running arch with vanilla gnome only uses around 700mb at desktop. Not that bad.
If you are super cheap like me, but enjoy well made machines try out an ancient macbook pro. I have a 2011 macbook pro 13" with the first gen (I think?) I5 CPU and 4gb ram. Got it from eBay, it used to belong to a school and someone ground the engraving off the lid, but there is a vinyl skin covering the damage.
It only cost me $40 Canadian, the battery lasts like new, and it came with a new charger. I installed arch Linux, on a new sata ssd, and its been great! WiFi was harder to get setup, but I figured it out. Can’t get Bluetooth working…
I love that it has a DVD drive, many ports including Ethernet, SD card, enough USB.
Its slow, but keeps up with everything I do… Mainly use it for watching YouTube, watching my jellyfin library, listening to music, using telegram, light python projects, some web site development with Hugo, and I ssh into my main PC with it.
