9·11 days agoOk here’s my trillion dollar idea:
SmartVape CloudBar. A range of premium smart home vaping devices that connect to (and depend on) the cloud so you can smartvape remotely (e.g. in the bed, on the job, or even when travelling).
Vaping, even locally, always works, unless your subscription has expired, there’s no internet connection available, or any of the necessary cloud service are down.

1·10 months agoProbably also due to new bus lines replacing smaller train lines and/or driving passengers to/from the remaining bigger train stations of the lines instead. I guess bus service had lower maintenance and operational costs while being more flexible than a small train or tram.

9·10 months agoWho wants to run scaled down desktop apps on their phone
I believe the UI of most apps could be made to work well with phone display sizes and resolutions.
and who wants a terminal on a phone either?
Well, I do! It’s great when you want to connect, do or automate something there isn’t an app for. For now I sometimes run Termux on Android. Among smartphone users in general I’m probably an edge case, but among Linux users, I must say, using a terminal on the phone doesn’t seem that crazy to me.

Tech@programming.dev•California man sues Microsoft for discontinuing Windows 10 — says company is doing this to “monopolize the generative AI market”
2·10 months agoI wouldn’t be able to tell you more than it’s an updated version with some new features added…
According to Wikipedia:
Windows 98 Second Edition (often shortened to Windows 98 SE and sometimes to Win98 SE or 98 SE)[76] is an updated version of Windows 98 released on June 10, 1999, about eight months before the release of the business-oriented Windows 2000.[77] It includes many bug fixes,[78] improved WDM audio and modem support, improved USB support,[76] added SSE2 support, the replacement of Internet Explorer 4.0 with Internet Explorer 5.0,[78] Web Folders (WebDAV namespace extension for Windows Explorer),[79] and related shell updates. Also included is basic OHCI-compliant FireWire DV camcorder support (MSDV class driver) and SBP-2 support for mass storage class devices.[80] Wake-On-LAN reenables suspended networked computers due to network activity, and Internet Connection Sharing allows multiple networked client computers to share an Internet connection via a single host computer.[78]
Other features in the update include DirectX 6.1 which introduced major improvements to DirectSound and the introduction of DirectMusic,[78] improvements to Asynchronous Transfer Mode support (IP/ATM, PPP/ATM and WinSock 2/ATM support), Windows Media Player 6.1 replacing the older Media Player 4.1,[76] Microsoft NetMeeting 3.0,[81] MDAC 2.1 and WMI. A memory overflow issue was resolved in which earlier versions of Windows 98 would crash most systems if left running for 49.7 days (equal to 232 milliseconds); this bug was also present on its predecessor, Windows 95.[82] Windows 98 SE could be obtained as retail upgrade and full version packages, as well as OEM and a Second Edition Updates Disc for existing Windows 98 users. USB audio device class support is present from Windows 98 SE onwards. Windows 98 Second Edition improved WDM support in general for all devices, and it introduced support for WDM for modems (and therefore USB modems and virtual COM ports). However, Microsoft driver support for both USB printers and USB mass-storage device class is not available for Windows 98.
Removed features
The Active Channels Channel bar from the original release of Windows 98 is not installed upon first boot, however it is retained when upgrading from the original release of Windows 98 to Windows 98 Second Edition.
Windows 98 Second Edition did not ship with the WinG API or RealPlayer 4.0, unlike the original release of Windows 98, due to both of these having been superseded by DirectX and Windows Media Player, respectively. On the other hand, ActiveMovie still exists in Windows 98 Second Edition despite having been superseded by Windows Media Player.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Router suggestions for a complete noobEnglish
13·10 months agoSo far I’m satisfied with our GL.INET Flint 2 (GL-MT6000). The price is within your range, and you can buy it directly from the manufacturer. It comes with OpenWRT and they’ve made it pretty easy to e.g. run your own wireguard VPN and AdGuard Home (like PiHole) for all your connected devices. The coverage is decent, and upgrading gave me WiFi in the second bathroom where the old router (10+ years old) could never reach. According to their own specs it has Wi-Fi speeds of 1148Mbps (2.4GHz) and 4804Mbps (5GHz), though I haven’t made my own measurings to verify those, and VPN speeds are lower at 190Mbps wired for OpenVPN and 900Mbps wired for Wireguard. At least this router has been very stable for the half year we’ve had it, and I haven’t experienced any bottlenecks from our modest usage.

2·11 months agoNot a universal solution for Android, but maybe it could lead your thoughts toward something useful. I know that Kodi has a toggle in the settings to stop that from happening. It works by constantly playing an inaudible low-frequency noise. Kodi runs on pretty much any OS, including Android, but since it’s HTPC software, the UX is not optimal on a small touchscreen in my experience, though there are some skins and/or skin settings to optimise the UI for touch-based navigation.
