2·5 days ago<I’m Just a Villager, So What?> - Volume 1 by Shiraishi Arata - ★★★☆☆, 167 MynePages™ - Plot-wise, it’s nothing special. Just your usual power fantasy, and not even a good one at that. But I like the prose in this one.
I’m Just a Villager, So What? - Volume 2 by Shiraishi Arata - ★★★☆☆, 234 MynePages™ - This continues in the same way as the first volume. Mid-plot, but good prose. I like, for example, how personifications of abstracts often describe the mood and atmosphere of a place. Take this excerpt:
The silence that followed was familiar. Not exactly comforting, but expected. I cast one last glance across the dim, empty aisles before stepping outside. I didn’t head for the exit; instead, I turned deeper into the library, toward the sections no one else dared approach, heading into the kind of silence that didn’t just whisper but watched.
There was also an interesting bait & switch. In a genre where everything is so formulaic, it was outright shocking to read. Got me good.
I’m Just a Villager, So What? - Volume 3 by Arata Shiraishi - ★★☆☆☆, 202 MynePages™ - It’s getting downhill. This volume was a lot worse than the first two.
<I Saved Myself with a Potion!: Life in Another World> - Volume 2 by Akira Iwafune - ★★★★☆, 135 MynePages™ - While I enjoyed the first 90% of the volume, it had an absurdly stupid end. I hope this gets resolved in the next volume in a different way than is indicated at the end of this one.

4·6 days agoI’m not overly concerned if the anime simply diverges from the LN a bit, but it at least needs to make sense by itself.
The problem is that you need intimate knowledge and deep understanding of the source material to make an adaptation into a different media. Whoever was in charge for this adaptation had neither. I would be surprised if they did more than quickly skimming the pages at best. They skimmed the scene in the replenishment hall and the word feystone might have stood out so they put it in, without understanding why the feystone would have been used there.

3·12 days agoI can add to that. The composer, Christian Bruhn, has become the head of the organisation that fucks you over if you dare to use a snippet of music from one of their members. I had to deal with them over the years a couple of times. I’ve grown up with German Captain Future. The title score is still a core memory of mine. I’m not sure if it was the first anime I’ve ever seen, but it’s in the first 3. And then the composer heads a litigious shithole of a government organisation. Speak about going from hero to villain.

3·12 days agoNegatives - Too much fighting in parts, I prefer a slower story I find too many fights can be tiring to read.
I think that was the reason why I didn’t pick up the second volume. All the constant fighting sequences started before I was hooked enough to suffer through them.

1·17 days agoI might post a bit more on the last episode’s thread, just in case they move some bits around in the anime and show them later, but the anime seems so far sanitized to move the needle further to the comfy/wholesome side.

3·19 days ago<Cooking with Wild Game> - Volume 34 by EDA - ★★★★☆, 181 MynePages™ - The main story was very short this time around, and the remainder of the volume was filled with side/bonus stories. From those, I was only interested in one of them, so this volume gets a point docked.
<Worthless at Home, Whiz to the World> - Volume 1 by kimimaro - ★★★☆☆, 104 MynePages™ - I think I’ve read the same story a couple of times already, but luckily in this rendition the MC isn’t quite as oblivious to his own strength as usual. Sure, there are the usual shenanigans, but at least the thought of “Hey, might I actually be quite strong compared to others?” pops up in his head. I take that as a win for the series. The obsessive bro-con sisters might also be a turn-off. For my taste, they are right on the edge of mildly entertaining and off-putting.
Worthless at Home, Whiz to the World - Volume 2 by kimimaro - ★★★☆☆, 103 MynePages™ - Pretty much more of the same as the first volume, with the only exception being that he has to convince a different sister. Since he has 5 of those, I can imagine how this series will play out.
Worthless at Home, Whiz to the World - Volume 3 by kimimaro - ★★★☆☆, 101 MynePages™ - Okay, I have to ask: who the fuck thought it was a good idea to put a color illustration at the beginning of the book that spoils the big twist happening at the end of the story? It’s like putting Darth Vader’s “No, I am your father” revelation into the opening crawl. Also, by now it’s clear that this is following the 1 sister per volume formula.
Worthless at Home, Whiz to the World - Volume 4 by kimimaro - ★★★☆☆, 96 MynePages™ - Another sister checked off. One more to go. I still wonder if the series will continue after the last sister and find a new plot device, or if it’s finished after that.

0·19 days agoYeah, let’s have a nice little relaxed chat and do nothing while one girl is fighting for the life of the sacrifice. They could just as well grab the sacrifice while the enemies are distracted by their frontliner, but that wouldn’t give MC the chance to be the hero that saves the day, so naturally we can’t have that now, can we? God, I hate those types of trash isekai harem shows so much, I have no idea why I can’t stop hate watching them.
