UK Politics@feddit.uk•Shock Poll: 82% Of Brits Want Israel Removed From Eurovision
11·16 天前I mean it sounds like you’d just be better off ignoring it, tbh.
Spoiler: It’s never.

UK Politics@feddit.uk•UK's 'Girl Scout' Group Has Banned Trans Girls From Joining In Cruel New Low
1·18 天前Me too, although I’m not sure how this one is their fault - I split blame between the “activists” who brought/funded the supreme court case, and the judges who ruled on it without (in my view) sufficient consultation of expert groups.

UK Politics@feddit.uk•NHS doctor suspended over alleged antisemitic social media posts
11·19 天前What do you mean by “the west”? Some people in western society do those things, many don’t.
And given that one of those things is holding all Jews responsible for the actions of the Israeli government, isn’t that a somewhat hypocritical accusation to level at the entirety of western society?

11·19 天前It’s misleading to characterise accusations as evidence.
What makes you think I’m characterising them as evidence?
cupcakezealot implied that it only takes accusations of calling out Israel for genocide, for the UK to cry antisemitism.
I’m saying these accusations are a lot more serious than that.

22·19 天前Sure, but the whole thing is alleged. My point is that it’s misleading to characterise those accusations as merely being an accusation that she said Israel committing genocide is bad.

To me, that’s a little stronger than “it’s bad Israel commits genocide”, but judge for yourself.
Quite. And I think that a lot of people can agree that this country absolutely needs reform, but that Reform would be a disaster.

1·25 天前Yeah, but only one is at the foot of the Mourne mountains, and only one would have organisers from BDS Belfast involved, and that’s the one in County Down in Northern Ireland…

UK Politics@feddit.uk•Sultana claims new Corbyn party carrying out 'witch hunt' - BBC News
9·25 天前I’d be putting down a novel with this storyline because it’s just such a cheap caricature of how the left behave.
Well “smeg” is just from Red Dwarf but “smegma” is an actual word, and that’s where they got the word from. They needed a futuristic swear word - Lister can’t be someone who doesn’t swear, but this was 1980s BBC - and they came up with that.
Smeghead
I don’t disagree, but it’s difficult explaining to Americans how “you have a head consisting of the congealed semen and other matter scraped from underneath someone’s foreskin” is only a mild insult.
Particularly when with a decent proportion of them, you first have to explain what a foreskin is.
I mentioned somewhere else where I’m still irate at is they’re saying electric 2 motorbikes will pay the same 3p as an EV car. That’s nonsensical, my 100kg moped has no meaningful damage to the road
It’s a nonsensical answer to the question “how can we ensure EV drivers are paying their fair share towards road damage?”
It’s a pretty good answer to the question “how can we squeeze as much taxes out of road users as we can, without pissing off people so much that they won’t vote for us” because motorcyclists make up a pretty small proportion of EV users, and it’s equitable, even if it’s clearly grossly unfair.
Oddly enough Reeves phrased the announcement as if it were the former, when it’s clearly the latter.
Ah fair. I didn’t listen to the words that went with the policy, because they are usually in direct opposition to it. Like how she didn’t just raise income tax.
That’s clearly unfair, but I don’t think the point was “lucky plug-in hybrid drivers” so much as “the whole policy is flawed, look at how they had to shoehorn in hybrids”
the per-mile setup should apply to all vehicles according to size and weight if it is truly for road wear.
Why would it be for road wear specifically? That’s not the current situation (as indicated by the fact that vehicles with lower emissions pay less), and none of it is hypothecated for road-specific funding anyway.
Yeah, I wouldn’t allow it, personally. I find it’s a bit of a weird one, like “pussy” - i.e. ruder than it should be, given that you can read the word in children’s books.

UK Politics@feddit.uk•The Chancellor’s New Revenue Plans Are a Boon to the Wealthiest
4·1 个月前I hope someone in the treasury is working out what it would cost to default on the national debt
It would most likely cost multiple pension funds, multiple banks, the pound, and hundreds of billions in increased interest rates. Then we have no money and borrowing is too expensive, so we don’t get to have a deficit. So that’s at least another £100b of cuts or extra funding we would need pretty much immediately.
Probably not worth it, on balance.
