  • Yes and no. It’s really hard to boast about your “mandate” when a large and still increasing portion of the population publicly hates your guts and thinks you’re doing a shit job. It’s not enough by itself to meaningfully hurt him, but it does make him look bad and undermine his leadership. It is bad for his image, and image is an important component of power.

It’s also bad for his ego and could potentially lead him to behave even more erratically in ways that are ultimately self-destructive. Narcissists famously don’t do well in the face of being perceived negatively. The worse his ratings get, the more humiliating it will be for him. It is important to hurt their morale at every opportunity, even if it’s not nearly enough to stop them on its own. Demoralized, defensive MAGA will always be a weaker foe than energized, popular MAGA.

  • The thing is, it’s true that money can’t buy you happiness. I can guarantee you that I would still be depressed after a salary increase. I actually think the majority of wealthy people are fucking miserable.

However, money can buy you a lot of other helpful shit and its importance should not be downplayed.

But I have always interpreted “Money can’t buy happiness” to mean that accumulating wealth beyond what you need to survive and be comfortable won’t actually make your life meaningfully better. And that’s true. Happiness levels off after a certain level of wealth.

“Money can’t buy happiness” is a warning only intended for people who already have enough money to meet their basic needs. It’s bad faith to say it to people who are struggling financially. It’s kind of like saying, “Food won’t bring you happiness.” It has a different meaning depending on whether you are saying it to an emotional overeater or someone who is starving and malnourished.

Money isn’t sufficient for happiness, but it’s usually necessary.

  • I don’t think it makes any resistance futile by any means. I just think the “just start blasting” attitude I keep seeing from people is naive, glib, and unconstructive. Guerilla resistance can absolutely be a powerful tool, but it requires a huge amount of coordination and solidarity that doesn’t really exist in our population right now and is not going to suddenly begin existing overnight.

The most important thing people can be doing right now is networking and organizing, identifying likeminded people and building community with them. This is the foundation of ANY effective resistance. And people ARE doing that.
