  • This doctor outrage was easily one of the top dumbest fucking things to ever come out of the USA. And of course it was all the right wing conservative people lmao. It’s just one thing after the other with these people. If they’re not angry that kids are learning Arabic numerals in school, they’re busy choosing 1/4 pounder burgers over 1/3 pounder burgers. But the doctor thing is definitely one for the hall of fame.

  • Just took a look and it definitely seems like the kind of instance that I’m looking for. The only thing is, I’ve just recently come from another instance with downvotes disabled (Blahaj) and was wanting to get a look at Lemmy with all votes enabled. Honestly I wish that individual communities or instances could choose to have downvotes disabled without it effecting every other instance too. Sucks that it’s an all or nothing kind of deal.

  • I honestly don’t think Arch is that bad or complicated. It’s just that you have to go into it knowing that you’re in for some reading, tinkering and following step by step instructions along the way. I’d start with something like Mint or Ubuntu for a first look for sure. But once you’re ready to learn a bit more about how the Linux system works and is put together, Arch would straight up be my first recommendation. Even if it’s something you play with on the side in a virtual machine, for me at least, starting on Arch was when my Linux experience went from clicking at things and copy pasting commands into the terminal to still copying and pasting commands lol, but actually learning why and how and what too.

  • I have always got good vibes from zip users and communities in the past. I see that one instance they de-federate from unfortunately is that hilariouschaos instance. One of the reasons I signed up here was to see the alt community there. That instance definitely gives me certain vibes though and it’s a pity that there’s a few communities on there of interest to me. But yeah, I’d like to find an instance that gets rid of illegal content and doesn’t allow straight bigotry under the guise of ‘free speech’ but I’d also like to be able to decide for myself sometimes. And block users or communities myself if they disagree with my politics or lifestyle.

Thanks very much for the help here. The links you shared are definitely going to be useful in helping me find what I’m looking for. This instance that I’m on right now is almost perfect for me so far, apart from the image hosting limitations.

  • Thanks, I guess I’ll just try doing homework this time to find exactly what I’m looking for. An instance that just doesn’t do any de-federating whatsoever is also kinda scary because I don’t want CSAM and shit ending up in my feed. I also don’t want to end up cut off from places like Blåhaj because of admins not taking action over certain things.

So I need something more like world or ee. But without any limits on image uploading either because I’d rather find an instance that can be both message board and image host than look for some third party image host platform to use that may or may not work nicely with various apps.

My problem is not reading properly. Because I was taken by surprise by the no downvotes thing when I signed up on Blåhaj and I was taken by surprise here on lemm.ee with the 4 week wait and 500kb limit on file uploads. So basically I just need to do my homework and read properly.

  • The feddit.org interpretation of that law is debated

Sure but that doesn’t change that they interpreted it the way they did and now they’re enforcing that interpretation. Theoretically any instance could do whatever they want but in reality this instance did the thing that everyone worries about centralised platforms doing.

I get that you can leave links to your old profile and communities, you can also do that on forum sites and any other platform when you switch. I still don’t see any difference or benefit here. As an end user that just wants a place to shit post and isn’t trying to run a server or write code or whatever, the experience is the same, whether I’m trying different Lemmy instances or different centralised platforms. And it’ll be the same until I can take my online presence and all of its history, pack my bags and go elsewhere with it. Not sure how that would work though, I’m just spitballing here.

Anyway, I think this is probably a conversation that I’m gonna avoid and ignore in future here though. I get the sense that the only place to discuss certain aspects of the Fediverse without people getting angry or taking things personally is somewhere outside of the Fediverse. Because people are weird and defensive about it and make it part of their personality, which I think is the reason for at least 50% of the hate towards Bluesky.
