  • Oh god, I set up a print server at work, it’s been a minute since I managed printers, and somehow I became convinced that HP’s Smart Universal Driver would work for all the HP printers.

Well, first off, if you set up a print server, Microsoft automatically implements the setting, “don’t download drivers from server, use Microsoft generic Point & Print drivers,” which don’t work at ALL.

So I undeploy all the printers and redeploy them with the correct setting - well that Microsoft drivers is still installed on all PCs and they want to use it by default. So lots of individual workstation fixing.

And then the HP driver fails, directing every HP printer to use Tray 1 (bypass) by default, not the drawer full of paper like it would normally.

So I’m 3 months into this job at this point, and everyone thinks I’m a moron.

    Good times.

  • It’s PTSD now. “Oh my god my last boss gave me PTSD”

“…I can’t trust the physical sensations in my body which are completely out of control, my entire arousal network is wired wrong, and my threat detection system is run amok.”

“Oh, I meant like, he was super mean.”

  • A thousand FBI agents working for weeks did the initial redactions back in the spring. Way too big an undertaking, and too quickly accomplished, to have gone right. I have old posts here predicting they’d fuck up the redactions on quite a bit of stuff. And I’m so glad to see it happening.

  • Ugh I had to do this with an internal SCSI drive many years ago, it would only reliably save if you held the back of the cable in, otherwise the pin might short just enough that the operation wouldn’t work. But I was a broke Jr High kid so there was no choice. Bent pins give me nightmares to this day.

  • I was living in a 10th story penthouse apartment as a new building started beside us. The contractor put a webcam high up on the structure so people could watch construction live on a website. They left the control panel fully exposed so all you had to do was find the IP address of the camera and boom, you had full control. I would point it directly at my apartment’s window and wave, or my friends would do silly shit. Every morning the cam would be reset, but they never actually secured it. That’s when I realized how fucked we were, 20 years ago.

  • But if you actually own one, the cost of everything maintenance wise is through the roof, contractors are difficult to get in a saturated commercial market, basically you can go from able to afford the house to struggling in a few years, housepoor just because things declined faster than you could account for. But you can’t sell it because rent is now way more expensive than the mortgage, even divided in half.

Ukraine support doesn’t bother me, that’s not splitting anyone here. Palestinian support, when it’s fervent enough to make Dems vote against Dem candidates, now we have a problem. Domestic issues, when they involve a fascist takeover, are simply more pressing than 70-year-old foreign policy, even if it does need fixing… it has for a long time. We won’t be able to get there if we’re an authoritarian hellhole.

  • Think of it as a remainder from a math problem. To keep a subservient middle class stretched across the lowest income brackets, you’re going to have a certain percentage of people who simply can’t afford to exist. They know that, it’s inherent to the system. It’s like that story, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.” That’s why there’s never any serious interest in fixing the problem - it’s just going to keep happening because the system generates it, so housing everyone homeless right now wouldn’t solve homelessness in 10 or 20 years time, it’d start all over again. Systemic.
