The temperature of the ground in some areas of Spain has hit more than 60C [140F] during the deadly heatwave sweeping Europe, satellite recordings have shown.
Temperature records have been broken on most of the continent, including France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, where highs of 40C [104F] were recorded again on Wednesday.
Sicily and Sardinia were forecast to be as high as 48C [118.4F].
These temperatures are no joke. For reference, it was about 48C (119F) in west Texas where the 2 Floridians died a couple weeks back.
Anyone experiencing this kind of heat needs to make it their #1 priority. Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Pay attention to yourself and your loved ones for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
They are a joke because temperatures in Spain are currently 40 degrees max (south of peninsula).
Perhaps you didn’t understand my comment or the article. The 60C number is, in fact, a meaningless, joke of a number, because they’re talking about how hot the ground is. Duh, the ground gets really hot. Be careful walking your dogs, though. Their paws can get severely burned quite quickly.
The heatwave has not hit its peak yet in Spain. That’ll be Monday through Wednesday next week. Highs will be around 43C (109F). 40C isn’t a big deal to me, but anything higher gets savage fast. The forecasts for Sardinia and Sicily actually aren’t as bad as the article predicts (not even hitting 38C/100F), but wunderground could just be inaccurate.
The bottom line for reasonable people is: if you’re forecast to get temps above 40C, take it seriously.
Or, like, don’t. I don’t know you, and I won’t be affected by your death, so get fucked or don’t. That’s on you. You’re just some human. You’re the lowest form of life on this planet in my eyes, and there are far too many humans already.

Second that, it’s a fantastic book and despite starting out laying out a grim state of the world it manages to paint a convincing way out of the horror that we created. I want to live in the world KSR imagines.
And it’s only going to get worse: “In Italy, temperatures could reach as high as 48.8C (119.8F)” The Cerberus heatwave (not sinister at all) has already claimed it’s first victim in Italy and temperatures haven’t peaked.
I live in Spain and didn’t hear anything about a heat wave. In fact here in the north it’s quite cool. The only place mentioned in the article is Extremadura which has up to 38 degrees in this weather app. That’s a normal summer temperature. It’s easy to survive with plenty of siesta.
Good to hear it’s not as bad as the article makes it out to be.
It’s worth noting that this is soil temp not air temp. Still bad just not quite as deadly as the title makes out

How the hell does a society even function at 60c?
Like, if this is how the world is going to be everywhere, how do we actually do this?
We’re not going to be the first species to go extinct, but we will be the first ones to do while having the option not to.
I don’t think it will be extinction, but a very prolonged suffering for whoever ends up “last”.
Sure, we might not die out entirely, but bad things are certainly coming and we’re likely past the point where we can avoid the horrors.
This is just insane. How are people not cooking alive? I don’t look forward to the coming years…
Wait isn’t this the world record for ground temp? I thought the previously highest recorded was like 52°C in death valley
