Maybe they think it’s not an unpopular opinion. (But yh, more likely they just don’t understand the concept of the community)

I have to agree with you on the second part. It really feels like people do not understand the concept after reading some comments.

Downvote if you find the post relatable or if you think the opinion is popular, otherwise upvote

The downvote button is either: “I disagree”, or “that’s stupid and you’re an idiot”. The up ote button is “I know, right?”

The downvote button is not supposed to be used as an “I disagree” (although that is how many people use it). Nor are you supposed to downvote something just because you personally don’t like it or the person that wrote it.

Downvotes are for posts that are irrelevant to the community/discussion at hand, trolling, arguements that are made in bad faith and that sort of thing.

If you really want a commenter to know that you disagree with them or that you think they’re stupid, you should reply to the comment with a well thought out counter argument of your own, not just “downvote and hope the comment gets hidden”.

That’s the difference between theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge. That can say all they want what the votes were designed to mean, but they can’t force people to use them that way.
