What the hell is wrong with CTV…
It’s been a shit show for me. We have people already out across Canada and old servers that don’t recognize the new time zones, so it’s been a lot of making shit up.
“Havoc”… for not fiddling with the clock
Skill issue
No so many problems in Alberta. People just assumed NTP would keep their clocks in sync for access and camera systems.
Please, fewer video links. Or at least post the transcript. Not giving YouTube clicks when this could easily be an article.
Fair enough.
CTV suggesting end of daylight savings time is like Y2K all over again and people in BC are oh so confused about the whole thing.
It is for alot of systems that where offline. And man there are a lot of bugs I had an access system that kept clicking on and off a relay till I changed the event to the same time zone. Why did it do this who knows.
Thanks! Fabulous summary that makes it easy for me to reply even without giving a video views. Also some of us are neurally wired to have tabs of information steams coming and a video blocks that. Ahah.
Y2K is an interesting comparison. I remember everyone infecting the moment when it was no big deal. Meanwhile jurisdictions the world over are ditching it and that makes BC by no means alone or without examples to show it will be fine.
For me it was a quote I forgot the origin: why did we change time to match factory work hours when we could have changed factory work hours to match time. Answer is a tale as old as time.
Y2K was not a big deal because everyone worked really hard to mitigate the time issues prior to it rolling over. And people are doing that now too, so we provably won’t see too many issues.
The time zone thing is a big issue for devs because everyone’s time adjustments and databases have their own hodge podge of remidies for correcting time based on where you are. A friend has been working all year on software solutions and fixes in the industry.
Issues like prior sold airline tickets have a time you should be on the flight, which will now be different. And issues like some database has correct time adjustments with zones pulled from a central places while another database just has peoples hacks of plus an hour minus and hour tacked on.
Even iPhones were (and maybe still are) still shit at meeting timesa when you move through time zones. Its a joke at work when people miss meetings, and we take bets on if it was their iPhone that screwed them over.
It would be nice if we all just used UTC regardless of what time that meant we starting our day. .
Not to mention there was not as much time to make changes. Look at MS notes for the patch basically complaining they where not given a lot of time Alberta was what 3 months notice. And they pushed a script on the 28th of October talk about waiting till the last minute.
BC does some pretty stupid things en masse.
I’m down in WA State now so it’s extra weird for me.
From Calgary and now you’re telling me the friends I play Pathfinder with online are two hours offset instead of one hour!? We now start at 8pm Alberta Time (is it called New Mountain Time or something?) and it’s 6pm in WA.
My parents are retired in Kelowna and suddenly I have to think about the hour offset when calling.
Mountain Time (Alberta) in windows and other devices that get updated.

There are apps that can make life easier for ya if you choose that route.
Most phones let you set multiple time zones and clocks as favourites or widgets.
Maybe you might wanna get a basic casio with world time or a smart watch?
It’s so pointless and dumb changing clocks twice a year. States will abandon it as well in coming years.
I mean I don’t have any problems adjusting to it, time wise. Just schedule-wise.
It’s just weird to be 2 hours off of Alberta.
I’m just getting off work at 6pm, and most of my friends in Alberta have young children and are up super early so we call it a night at 9:30pm Alberta time so they can get to bed and be asleep. They can’t stay up an hour later for us to start later so it’s up to me to leave work a bit early now. (mind you I got let go so no job at the moment, so not a huge issue).
It feels weirder for Alberta to be 1hr off of Ontario. I wouldn’t say a problem… just a bit weird.
My employer’s computer system is so old …and the devs that know how to work on it are all retired… they can’t fix it with to add or adjust the new time zones. So instead of calling one of the retired guys to come contract out to fix it, like they did for a different system change they did a few years ago, they’re just going to leave it and make us all operate in a different time zone at work.
Just choose Saskatchewan time been around forever and has no DST. So -6 the whole year.
As I said in another comment, it’s a national company so we operate in several different time zones. The issue comes from the fact that Ontario and Quebec (I think) are still changing their clocks. Otherwise I’m sure they could just change the clock on whatever server is running these legacy systems.
It’s also a mainframe system so we are all logging into one system.
Also also (and I didn’t find this out until this shit show happened) our employees in Saskatchewan have already been dealing with work time vs town time for like… well forever it looks like. So maybe the system NEVER could adjust for DST and the only reason it worked was because someone is manually adjusting the clock on the server. Idk. I’m at a complete fucking loss as to why this is an issue now, let alone how this could have been an ongoing issue in Saskatchewan for DECADES without anyone figuring out how to deal with it.
No one knows how to adjust the time to UTC-x on an AS400?
The issue is that its a national operation so the difference between provinces that changed and provinces that didn’t change creates the problem.
They would either need to create new time zone profiles for the provinces ditching daylight savings or they would have to manually swap the time zones of certain locations in the system every 6 months. I gather that both are now beyond the IT department’s ability.
Yukon time exists and it’s a perfect interim match.
They would have to figure out changing a bunch of location’s time zones though and that *may* be beyond their capability. Also I don’t know if the system has Yukon’s time zone or not since we don’t operate there.
Its starting to cause a whole ton of small issues and now some relatively minor pay issues due to this potentially allowing the company to dodge shift differential pay.
I would go into more detail on a lot of stuff but I don’t want to name the company or anything.
