Dear sewing community,

I am a beginner when it comes to sewing so I’m not sure what went wrong. I did a simple headscarf, basically a square piece of fabric with narrow rolled hems.

I did all four sides the same way, pressed it, pinned it, sewed and pressed again. The fabric is very slightly stretchy in one direction and the stretchy sides turned out nice and flat, while the non-stretchy sides look slightly crumpled despite ironing.

It doesn’t make sense to me, according to my logic it should be the other way around. But anyways, what does one do to prevent that?

My guess would be that the hem is stretched slightly more than the rest of the scarf (or vice versa). You could try using a zigzag stitch with some scrap fabric, as another commenter suggested.

Even with the edge’s wonkiness, I’m sure it looks lovely! Also keep in mind that makers (sewers, knitters, or whatever) tend to see the flaws in their projects much more easily than people who don’t make things.

A zig-zag stitch will stretch and shrink with the fabric; a straight stitch generally won’t.

I’m not expert enough to pick out the error but maybe your tension is a little off, or your foot pressure, so your rolled hem slipped a little sideways. It shows up where the flat fabric is trying to reach over a few threads to where it wants to be. And maybe the stretchy fabric was able to accommodate it by stretching.

Or I could be completely wrong.
