Lady Elliot Island sat bare, bleak and silent for 100 years after guano miners ravaged it, leaving a moonscape devoid of life. Then in the 1960s, one family started planting trees.

    I went here as a kid with the folks… I remember LOTS of seabirds, having a lovely time snorkelling over lovely reefs that were accessible by just walking in to the ocean from the beach and looking down, and accidentally stealing money from some other kid in the “casino” cause I was 100% confident I’d put my bet on a particular number but then afterwards wasn’t so sure… but they’d already handed it over. I still feel bad about that. I think I was wrong.
