Two features are indispensable for those who are only online periodically and have no ZNC server:
- The chathistory feature enables us to grab a recent log when entering a channel.
- MemoServ is a memo service bot that collects messages for you while you are offline and delivers them to you when you connect.
It’s somewhat shocking that libera.chat still does not have the chathistory capability. But it has MemoServ. Then servers that I know of which support chathistory (e.g. irc.techrights.org) do not have a memo service bot.
Does anyone know of a server that has both?
Normally, we would expect netsplit.de to have this sort of information. But the server list is a bit crude and unsearchable. Is netsplit.de the only game in town? Looks like they do not export their dataset.
(update) someone mentioned irc.unrealircd.org likely has both features… but sounded uncertain. I’ll have to check into it.
sorry for posting an unrelated comment, but is your internet connection not stable enough? power usage concerns can be mitigated by running irc on an old phone.
alternatively using matrix’s irc bridges may also work well enough
I don’t even have Internet at home. I use it in public spaces. There are moments when I had a quasi permanent connection but it was a measured rate service and I still would not keep an always-on machine anyway.

Interesting thought but I suppose during moments when I have a somewhat persistent uplink, I might rather try to run ZNC on an openwrt router, assuming that’s possible.
But I must also say the question is not just about me. It’s for a club and that club meets in an IRC chat room. It would not be ideal to impose on all members of the club a need to have a persistent uplink and an always-on machine. The club should establish itself on a server that supports chathistory and MemoServ so that every member can be accommodated.
