Canadian transit fucking suuuuuuuuucks. This isn’t a “we can teach them a thing or two” situation, it’s a “holy shit they’re even worse somehow?!”
Came here to say something similar. It takes 90 minutes to get across town here - and that’s if all three buses you have to take are on time.
If you double a very small number you’re left with a pretty small number
Imagine being able to take transit across town.
Apologies, I don’t mean to make this a misery Olympics.
Many American transit agencies really do try to spend their limited resources on Reach rather than Frequency. Think 30 minute headways to nowhere at the expense of overcrowded buses in central districts. The thinking being that a bus route in everyone’s district is more valuable than maximizing ridership by providing decent service in a more limited area.
In an era of so many additional mobility options, the result is less support for transit overall. We could learn a thing or two by focusing on maximizing ridership with the funding available.
Both USA and Canada need to do something about their suburban sprawl to make transit a reasonable option.
I used transit when I had no choice. Then I drove but that also sucks and gets more dangerous every year. Now I bike and sometimes use the skytrain if it can take me to a safer bike route.
If the skytrain had a more complete network without needing bus transfers I would likely use it regularly, but biking is free and the train doesn’t save me time apart from the rare long haul to the total other end of the line.
I think there are better transit networks to learn from.
Canadas smaller sized cities need better transit
US cities can learn? Apart from NY, maybe a small number of other places, this seems quite unrealistic.
