I went to see Guernica once (the painting, not the town) and I remember having a profound sense of “what a large painting”. This gives me the same feeling.

Guernica changed my life. I saw Guernica many years ago, when it was still at MOMA. I was a college student on a school trip to NYC to see the traveling Tut exhibit at the Met.
I had been looking forward to seeing Guernica, after studying it in books for years, but when I walked into the room, it slapped me in the face with its enormous size. I actually FELT the impact it had on me. It literally took my breath away. I hadn’t expected that.
I told the rest of my group to move on, and I would catch up, and I spent the next 45-60 minutes with Guernica, marveling at its size, among everything else. I’m so glad I did, since it eventually went to Spain, where I will probably never see it again. It’s still the most memorable art experience I’ve ever had.
It made me appreciate how important it was to see art in person, so you can get the true visceral reaction to the size, the colors, the finish, etc. Ever since, whenever I travel, I always try to find my way to the local art museum for a few hours, and Guernica is what lit that inside of me.
Cool story! It’s not hard to see in Madrid if you’re already in that part of the world, I’d recommend it to anyone. It’s with a lot of other dark civil war stuff though and it can be quite intense.
Guernica belongs in that environment. It’s the darkest painting I’ve ever experienced.
