Original Reddit Post: Turkic/Turkish
Recently on X, people were arguing about the terms Turkish and Turkic. Some ppl believe that Turkish means someone from Türkiye or belongs to Türkiye, so the Turkic must be used. What do you guys think about this?
I personally believe that Turkish or Turk is the same and it is the common term for all Turkish people. Turkic is a made up name by westerners I dont know why.
As a person from Türkiye it discomforts me to use Turkic for Turkish people from other countries. It is just Turk.
In Anatolian Turkish there is no difference which sometimes causes problems with other Turkic speakers in English but Turkic/Turkish are English and “foreign” labels anyway so I think Türk for everything is indeed the best, you can then clarify with Anatolian Türk etc.
