Lets be honest, replacing labels on a shelf is hardly a job we need to be saving.
Just make it illegal to raise prices on products while customers are in the shop so that they can’t change the price between you picking it up and going to pay for it.
I don’t think they are “likely” going to do that. Its literally their intended purpose
This isn’t a defense of them, more a condemnation of the system we have atrophied into… but wouldn’t it be illegal for a publicaly traded company to invest a bunch of capital into a new system that didn’t squeeze more profits out of people and depress employee costs further?
I remember this quote from a reptile’s lover: Expecting companies to not seek profit is like expecting love from a pet snake.
Like snake companies are not designed to love the people that feed them and make them exist. It is unreasonable to anthropomorphize them and expect anything else from them than the maximization of profits.
Which is why where companies work, we should just put safeguard rails so that they don’t bite people where they can. And this is also why we should seek other arrangements for any sort of endeavours where the maximization of profit is not the correct incentive.

We are squeezing down the margins on everything. At one point, we should accept that profit is not the correct incentive to make things better.
