They put this near the bottom of the article, after layering on horseshit about how strange it is that some people don’t want to throw their lives away to fight Russia pointlessly.
I don’t have the words for it right now other than it disgusts me how these elites pretend like they give a rat’s ass about the country they live in, while also chipping away at social services and doing everything in their power to make sure war happens. It is in direct defiance of observable reality, the way they talk about Russia. Russia was slow to take on Ukraine directly after years of problems caused by it being turned into a NATO proxy. It’s like the geopolitical equivalent of taunting someone over and over and over, and then when they smack you, you go “wow, you really have a temper.”
It has become more extreme but to be honest you were openly labeled a lunatic and Russia fan for opposing NATO for a long time now. Ukraine has been a comfortable reason for “leftist’s” (read liberal) to join in.
Freedom of opinion is, like most of the freedoms here, useful as long as you align and aren’t ‘out of luck’ (for example can’t work). Getting thrown under the bus is just ‘the next opportunity’ away. Hurray!
The whole article is basically written to convince people that they should accept austerity to fight Russia. The funniest part to me is how they infantilize people there saying that the public is just too darn naive to really understand the threat of the Russian bear. Nowhere does the article ask the question of why Europe is dead set to fight a war with Russia. Also amazing how they talk about the hybrid war without ever mentioning how it was the west that started attacking civilian infrastructure in Russia and doing sabotage killing civilians.
