    I mean, the CPSU also had millions of militants, and it collapsed. But yes, leftist critics are usually just armchair critics. Even when I considered China to be a capitalist revisionist country, I always defended it against the US. Regardless of any amount of revisionism within the CPC, there is absolutely no justification for equating China to the US when it comes to geopolitics.

    Very funny and all but lets not act like big political party=correct. The Nazis had millions of card carrying members back in their day, and the fascist Indian political parties alone dwarf practically the entire leftist population of the west, numbers don’t mean that much.

    I never got this meme. It is possible for one person to be correct even if they’re the only ones holding the position, though this certainly isn’t such an example.

      The way I see it, while it’s technically true in the abstract that one person can be correct and millions of others wrong, it should give someone pause to investigate a bit more if they are the lone one pushing up against millions. Typically when this is actually the case, it’s probably going to be something where it’s a scientific matter and the reason the millions are wrong is because their scientific paradigm is missing something important (political example: dialectical materialism vs. idealism). But western arrogance works in this way like “but I am western, so I don’t need to be scientific about it, I can go off of vibes.”

      Western arrogance is also not interested in actually talking to the people who do believe the other thing (maybe talking at them sometimes, but certainly not listening to). It’s just interested in setting them apart as “wrong/ignorant” and calling that an accomplishment in itself. This can be turned inward sometimes too, like when some westerners styling themselves as communists are quick to condemn the non-communist population as hopelessly ignorant and themself as seeing through the lies (usually while forgetting or downplaying the times in life that they were not themself communist).

      So it’s not so much that the westerner in this equation is wrong because the other view is “popular” but they are being wrong to be hugely arrogant about what they know vs. what millions of other people know. Genuine humility is scarce in the west, but that’s going to have to change as time goes on and westerners start to realize they’re becoming woefully behind China in development and living standards.

        This was beautifully put. And it deeply resonated with me. It’s probably why I had a difficult time resonating with the meme because I have been in that position before of holding a belief backed by science against a bunch of other people going off vibes, even from comrades in my area. It’s made an misanthrope out of me at my worst, I admit.

      Context matters, when it comes to objective facts, a bunch of people thinking something is true doesn’t make it so. However, when it comes to subjective experience, then the opinions of people actually living in the country do matter far more than those of the outsiders.

    Which tbh would that even matter? Them being members likely means that they have no other outlet for their political voice and that, despite their money, they have the political power of a party member only.
