How does one join the watch party? I absolutely love this movie
I love this movie as well, but I’ve never been able to get into the whole social media watch party thing sadly. During covid we did try to watch movies with friends using video chat, but it was kinda awkward because of the sound.
Open the link it brings you to a page with links further down to where you can legally watch the movie
- Just start watching that movie this Saturday, Aug 15 at US ET 12pm / BST: 5pm / CEST: 6pm
- for sources to watch the movie, click on this link and scroll down a bit (look for justwatch, or archive, etc…): https://eggplant.place/collection/5jeDCVuv2CFWSrPHTtFsk6
- and follow #KungFuSat over on mastodon for live text commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/kungfusat
- I usually open two web browser windows side-by-side on a computer. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something.
- Get a Mastodon account, if you don’t have one already.
- Get the film ready (stream, DVD, download etc).
- Get Mastodon ready (website, app etc) by going to the hashtag
#KungFuSat - At the start time, press PLAY on the film, and read & write posts on Mastodon with the hashtag
#KungFuSat.
There any many ways to do it, but personally I usually use:
- a laptop connected to my TV
- external or remote keyboard/trackpad
- a download of the film (.mp4/.mkv) on my computer, played in my local video player, on the left side of my computer screen/TV
- a web browser window with https://liveblog.stefanhayden.com/ (because you can enter the hashtag once & it stays for future posts; you don’t have to keep writing the tag every time for each subsequent post) connected to my Mastodon account, on the right side of my computer screen/TV

Example re the #Monsterdon watch party.
- Left: SMPlayer playing video file of film.
- Right: narrow Zen Browser window with Liveblog
-
- Upper area: Tags for posting window set to
#Monsterdon&#MonsterMiru(a related tag), so that I don’t have to keep typing them myself manually for every single post
- Upper area: Tags for posting window set to
-
- Lower area: Search set to
#Monsterdonso that I see posts for that watch party
- Lower area: Search set to
I have never watched it but I was planning to. Thanks for the recommandation.
Edit: shit, “Directed by John Carpenter” with Jerry Hardin, the X-Files’ Deep Throat? How could have I missed this masterpiece?
Yea, it’s a classic - a brilliantly funny one. It’s a B movie in tone, so easily overlooked if you don’t know about it.
“What? What will come out no more!?”
I’ve loved it for decades.
I only just watched Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness for the first time last Saturday and I was also like “How the hell did I never watch this before?!”
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the bar room wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like that: “Have ya paid your dues, Jack?”
“Yessir, the check is in the mail.”
