    i don’t agree with the assertions in the article. It’s a false equivalence. This is factory farming, and it’s not exclusive to animal agriculture. It’s agriculture designed to maximize profit that ignores all ethical consequences. Yes, this system is cruel. Yes, it is bad for the environment, but it’s not animal agriculture that is causing it. It’s the capitalist way of doing agriculture that is destructive. It’s the agricultural equivalent to strip mining.

    It bothers me that people use a correlation is causation fallacy to justify their biases, which isn’t an honest way to make an argument. All agriculture under capitalism is destructive. For example, avocados. They are delicious and a very good source of nutrition. However, producing them at the scale that capitalism demands uses obscene amounts of water and land. Despite that fact, avocados are wildly popular. It’s easy to demonize that which doesn’t fit with your moral standards when you ignore the internal contradictions of that moral standard.

    Hate the method. It’s the method that is the source of the problem. The cruelty and destruction comes from capitalism. You’re not going to win people over by telling them the source of their food is evil. People would rather have full bellies than to please a special interest group.

      Vegans would assert that almost any animal agriculture at our stage of development is unnecessary as there is no reason why we can’t be consuming the calories that we farm for animals to eat instead.

      Vegans do not ask for people to do the impossible, they ask for people to cut out animal products as far as is practicable. And in the global North it is incredibly practicable to cut out 95%+ of animal products we consume.

      We will still need to intensively farm plant crops to feed the masses, and we should still break out of Capitalism to make that process better and less damaging. Animal agriculture under capitalism exacerbates a problem that we will have to overcome under socialism, that consuming animals at our level of development generally is a waste of vital resources that are becoming more and more irreplaceable.
