Spain announced it was installing a 500-meter-long (1,600-foot) containment barrier on the sea border between its North African territory of Ceuta and neighboring Morocco after between 50,000 and 60,000 migrants breached the frontier earlier this week.
The death toll climbed to 67, including some who drowned and others who were killed in a stampede to cross a breakwater barrier, the Spanish government said Saturday.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez slammed the reaction of some other European Union leaders to the events in Ceuta, saying calls for Spain to be suspended from the EU’s borderless Schengen zone were “driven by prejudice, fake news, ignorance, or political interest.”

This is so fucking infuriating. And now Russia is also using this story to amplify cries about western left liberal snowflakes not being able to control Europe’s borders, pushing opinions even further to the right.
There were Instagram reels posting videos of Barcelona landlords fortifying owned (mostly empty) housing from squatter takeovers, and connecting them to Ceuta events, as if “Barcelona prepares for waves of Moroccan migrants coming for your houses”.
Swimmers had crossed about 4km over water, so adding 500m of fence won’t be acting as a serious deterrent. A lot of people were driven into the exclave via land border, literally directed by Moroccan police.
The whole Ceutan Zerg rush is a Moroccan orchestrated event to punish Spain for cozying up to Algeria. It’s not the first, previous event happened in 2011. Almost all of these people left Ceuta, apart from a handful of desperate younglings who see no future (or chances to survive) in rocky deserts of Morocco and for whom it’s a more likely chance to survive. None of them, literally zero people placed a foot on European continent.
Solution to this is Spain’s acknowledgement of colonial past and probably coming to some political solution over West Sahara but of course extra fence defence is more legit in the eyes of right wing dorks like Meloni.
