    Hah, I missed both that the names were palindromes, and that all of the shoe brand names start with ‘C’.

    The red herrings proved quite useful, because I could deduce that OTTOMAN had nothing to do with the EMPIRE, and that EVEREST and FUJI were not referring to mountains. Once I saw HONEYCRISP, it was just a matter of finding the other two apple varieties.
