I completely agree the current power train setup is terrible, it’s currently just a load of compromises meaning it offers very little positive.
But F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle and future of automotive technology. As much as I love the roar of a naturally aspirated petrol powered engine, it certainly is not the pinnacle or future.
I also agree the manufacturers have too much power, but ultimately, without them, we don’t really have any cars to race with, and if they don’t see a benefit to building cars, they are just going to leave the sport.
Hybrids are terrible as you have to carry around 2 power trains so will never be the full solution. We either have to go fully electric, which is impossible as that is formula e, or we find an ICE solution that is sustainable, future proof at least in the short term, and pushes automotive technology forward. V8 petrol engines isnt that solution.
It seems like an insane step backwards to throw away hybrids for ICEs, even road car manufacturers are starting to acknowledge that its a technological dead-end. I don’t care how much they can claim the fuel is “sustainable”, it’s hard to see past the fact that the main sponsors are still oil companies.
Sounds a bit like turning F1 into LMP2.
