Ottawa– Unifor Quebec Director Daniel Cloutier appeared today before the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates (OGGO) as part of its examination of the federal government’s Buy Canadian policy. In his presentation, Daniel Cloutier reiterated that the trade war launched by the United States has underscored the vulnerability of Canada’s economy and the importance of rebuilding the country’s industrial capacity.

    The problem isn’t that most Canadians don’t support buying locally, but the multitude of other reasons it’s difficult such as deceptive labeling, lack of availability of home-grown options, deceptive retailers, and the expense where home-grown is often dramatically more expensive than a cheap Chinese/US has import.

    In a Canada where your dollar has very limited buying power for the foreseeable future, the government needs to help heavily incentivise Canadian production and the distribution/cost offset of it.
