From Colin Vanner

At last some feather detail in face / Really close up of an inflight wild and free Barn Owl / so close that the large shot is hardly cropped and I had to close lens down to just over 100mm / info says it was 4.4m away and did not spot me.

I always do this to the neighbor’s cat when I see it stalking me from the second floor window to let him know that I see him watching.

That’s good. Cats need to be on their toes. My mum has bird feeders and doesn’t like her neighbour’s cat in her garden. After the cat no longer reacted to her yelling and clapping she equipped herself with a super soaker.

    Bonus:

    Commenter:

Beautiful photographs, although I do wonder, if these magnificent predators can detect a tiny vole or field mouse (usually scurrying between tall grass etc) what makes you think he didn’t spot you? 😊 it’s just my observation NOT a criticism 🦉🥰🦉

    Colin:

thank you very much / and I try hard not to be seen (hidden with camo cover) and this happens if they see me 😁

Last time I saw an owl at the public library, it pooped on the carpet. The kids really seemed to like that though. 😆

That photo popped up in my timeline recently, and while that owl is recently gone, I now work with the guy that was its main handler.

I’ve had to resort to making my own owls for the open house! 😄

I don’t think I’ve shared them here yet, but these are life sized cutouts I made of the 8 owls of Pennsylvania.

They’re going to have one of the artsy kids paint them up for me.

          Left to right is:

          • Saw Whet
          • Eastern Screech
          • Long Ear
          • Short Ear
          • Barn
          • Barred
          • Great Horn
          • Snowy

We’ve really been having a bad time with owls lately.

I haven’t shared any of the stories here because I feel like it’d make us sound like we’re not doing something right, but it’s just been a real run of bad luck. 🥺

Our current raptor patients are doing well though. All 3 are out in the flight pens now, building muscle back up. We’ve got 2 Red-tailed Hawks and a nice looking Turkey Vulture.
