According to Patricia Lewis, a former employee of the Royal Institute of International Affairs and the United Nations, the main concern is not the threat of Iran developing nuclear weapons — there is no objective evidence of that — but the potential destruction of enriched uranium storage facilities as a result of U.S. and Israeli strikes, as well as possible attacks on Iranian nuclear power plants. Such incidents could release radioactive materials and cause an environmental disaster in the region. However, the expert noted that the likelihood of the U.S. or Israel using nuclear weapons is low, as doing so would not serve their interests. The expert believes that countries in the region should conclude an agreement similar to the one between India and Pakistan, which prohibits strikes on each other’s nuclear facilities. It is also noted that the best way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue would be to reach an agreement similar to the JCPOA, which the U.S. withdrew from during Trump’s first term.
