Hi everyone,

I have a question. I currently own a Galaxy Z Fold 7 and am considering switching to a Fairphone 6 running Murena. My main priorities are using Proton Mail, my banking apps, and Android Auto. What should I know before making the switch?

Thanks!

I have a fp6, with /e/os. I use all the things you list. Android auto only just started working in limited ways, but you have to follow a doc from murena release notes to get it working. Basically you have to install a few Google services. After that, the digital assistant still doesn’t work, so you can’t respond to texts and stuff but everything else works fine. Proton apps all work great, in fact proton VPN is on the F-Droid store.

Banking apps vary, but my bank works great.

Thank you for sharing this; Android Auto has been one of two questions holding me back from taking this plunge.

It makes me wish that murena had more inexpensive options so that I wouldnt be afraid of jumping in.

Oh is it 4g only lol, no thanks. Don’t give up on the idea of buying used phones too. Just be careful to search for bootloader unlocked. Else you get a Verizon phone that’s only carrier unlocked. I flashed /e/os on an fp5, and a pixel tablet, it’s pretty easy.

do you now what network coverage is like in the united states for fairphones; my google searches give me conflicting testimonials of people who bought them

If you are on T-Mobile, or one of their subsidiaries like Mint mobile, you’ll have great coverage. I don’t know if any of the other carriers work though.

Whatsapp no longer works on any aosp ROM, even with locked bootloaders. It requires attestation and bootloader lock, so the only way to use it it either with stock ROM, or - like I currently am - with matrix bridge (which pretty much sucks).

I wish I could convince relatives Signal is the same, but better, but they are still on Yahoo and Facebook, so they are a completely lost cause (even my wife doesn’t want to, as she says she already has WhatsApp and that’s enough).

Edit: End rant. You might not even use WhatsApp and then you can be happy. i suggest you install and use the Sapio app to check some of your apps compatibility.
