I learned some Irish for DND… I’m not Irish and don’t live in Ireland. It’s a very beautiful (and difficult) language.
I played a historical online rpg and my character was in Ireland, so i learned some Irish as well. Very different language, and yes it is a difficult one.
Fair play. I try to learn a few words of other people’s languages out of curiosity but also respect. Just things like hello/bye, yes/no and thank you.
A friend told me recently that in their country there are free language classes at weekends for the native language. We should absolutely have that here. Everybody should be paid to teach but nobody should be paying IMO. The work of decolonisation is a state responsibility too.
A government that cares about undoing the damage would be welcomed. At least we give tax incentives to foreign companies and ignore our housing problems.

at a minimum, teachers & lecturers should be able to attend irish lessons for free, subsidised by the government.
if the government had any imagination or motivation, we could slowly transition all irish education into being irish-medium education after a few years of this.
it could start with all junior infants classes being conducted through irish, then all junior & senior infants classes the next year, etc all the way into university level eventually. that way, teachers & lecturers would have plenty of time to slowly work their way up in their irish-medium teaching ability.
ofc, it’d be nice to make all irish lessons subsidised by the government full stop, so that our native language isn’t kept behind a paywall, but making it free for educators is the least the government could do.
Yes. It’s bizarre that the government actually continue our cultural erasure (economic growth seems to be their culture).
They’re prefer “small government” and we are supposed to sort ourselves out. I’m all for personal responsibility, but we cannot as individuals solve systemic problems that they have authority over.
