After watching Dolemite Is My Name (2019) in the #Comedon watch party last week, great biopic about Rudy Ray Moore starring Eddie Murphy, last night it was time to watch the man himself.

In his quest for all-out entertainment, Moore stars as Dolemite, the world’s sexiest pot-bellied middle-aged action star, and throws in everything & the kitchen sink: shoot-outs, sped-up car chases, room-shaking love scenes, standup comedy, kung fu, kinky torture, raps, titties, dance numbers and nunchucks. And as we all know, every movie is better with titties, dance numbers and nunchucks! 🤣

Bonus: we get a young Ernie Hudson!

Now that I’ve seen both films, Dolemite Is My Name is almost The Making of The Human Tornado. If you have fun watching this film, I strongly recommend watching DIMN (it’s on Netflix).

“Dolemite is my Name” is great because it talks about the roots of the Dolemite movies: people hanging out and telling outrageous stories, then other people taking those stories and refining them and using them to make entertaining movies. This subtly attacks the term “blaxploitation” because (as Fred Williamson and Michael Jai White and others point out ) it’s a belittling term and there’s usually no exploitation, just people doing their best to entertain.

And “The Human Tornado” is one hell of an entertaining movie. Often it is offensive or outrageous or uncomfortable but there are maybe five minutes total where the movie “slows down” and usually those involve scenes of people hanging out and talking and having a good time – which is entertaining in its own way. The rest of the time people are fighting or dancing or playing songs or cracking stand-up quality jokes or cucking the sheriff or throwing grenades in torture dungeons or stripping down and doing nunchucks wearing nothing but a speedo or crawling out of boxes to have sex on a set of oversized blocks that spell out “BED” - all of that and more is in the movie, rapid-fire, with barely a pause to hang out and laugh about it. It really is a Tornado of a movie.
