"At one point during the trial, jurors were shown video of passengers in the vehicle carrying Mays trying to flag down a city ambulance that drove away from them. "

Along with more than a little liability directly on Mayor Durkin and Police Chief Best for gambling that abandoning the East Police Precinct would lead to protesters ransacking it and give them cause to escalate. But thankfully the protesters didn’t. Instead, they blockaded the building and treated it as occupied territory, preventing it from being seriously damaged (aside from some graffiti).

Those choices by Durkin and Best may not amount to criminal acts, but they sure as fuck deserve to follow them around for the rest of their careers, their lives, and their legacies.

From everything I gathered it wasn’t even Durkin or Best’s call, they had so little control over the precinct that the call was made and they were only reacting and trying to save face that they were calling the shots.

Civil trials in Washington require only 10 of 12 jurors to agree.

Holy crap, that makes so much more sense! I know it’s not the point of the article, but I was floored. Why do most of our trials seem to require a unanimous verdict!? Try to get any small group of people to agree on something and there’s always a contrarian…
