The Japanese name came first, ミミッキュ and the English uses that, so the pun may not have been as obvious in the Japanese. But, because Mimikyu is mimicking Pikachu, whose name is also the same across all languages, they also extended the same respect to Mimi. I think it’s cute and I like the name

The illustrator, Ligton (Bulbapedia, The Art of Pokémon) is a relative newcomer, with their first card (a lovely Umbreon V (Bulbapedia, The Art of Pokémon)) releasing in early 2022.
