Hellu!

A while back I made myself a tiny travelers journal from scrap leather, elastic sewing thread and glue! It’s roughly the size of a card-holder or small wallet. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine :) When I bring it out, I usually have one of those small IKEA pens with it!

It has the size of A7 but because I decided to have loose pages I mostly use them as A6. Neat huh?

I have two sections, one more private and one less private.

What’s yours smallest notebook?

Very nice! I do something very basic by comparison: I always keep a few index cards in my back pocket for fleeting notes. Those are 3×5" (7.6×12.7cm), so slightly wider, and a couple of centimeters taller than A7.

ooh, neat. A few cards (or pages) are often more than enough! Nice size, do you make them yourself of do you buy them like that?

Do you have a system for the cards at home? Like Zettelkasten or do you just like cards? :)

I buy them, since index cards are easy get a hold of. They tend to come in heavier stock that doesn’t fall apart in my pocket without protection from a cover. They are not as nice to write on as my notebook, but they work.

I used to carry a Moleskine notebook. But I realized that a few cards make for a slimmer, more comfortable arrangement that is easier and cheaper to replace when writing space fills up.

They are for notes that I don’t keep, so no I don’t have a card organizer. Some notes are only relevant short-term. Stuff I want to keep I copy into my big notebook, and scribble over to remind myself that I don’t need to pay attention to that info on the card anymore. If I’m going to be writing a lot, like if I’m going to an activist meeting, then I bring my big notebook (size B5).

I do have Zettelkasten notes, but mine are digital, using Obsidian. My paper notes are Bullet Journal things.

aah nice! You seem to have a well-worked system! I’m a bit envious, mine is a mess. haha

You also don’t need to worry about dropping a few cards. Dropping a whole Moleskin notebook would be more sad.

ooh interesting you have a B5 notebook, It’s between A5 and A4, right? Is it common where you live? Now I’m curious :D

Thanks! I do my best to stay organized.

I’m in the US where we generally don’t use ISO paper sizes, except for in some niches like notebook enthusiasts. But we have a notebook size called a “composition” book that is close to B5, and is very common, especially among students. I think it’s the most common notebook size here.

ooh true true! Very interesting :) Isn’t there a paper size called ‘letter’ as well? That’s like an A4 but longer

Yes, letter is the standard size in the US for loose leaf, printers, writing pads. It’s actually wider and shorter than A4. The other main sheet size is “legal”, which is the same width as letter, and is longer than A4. Legal is much less common. You’re most likely to see it on yellow, ruled “legal pads”.

It’s looking good, I really like it!

My smallest notebooks are A6. One I use for tracking my gym workouts. And one I have just for some notes. Honestly, I just got it because I liked the design and I look for a use now that I have it. But I am thinking about using it as a mix of a calendar and a project planer.

      Thank you!

Neat, you have two? I used mine in the beginning to track workouts. It’s a decent size, but I have better discipline on my phone usage now so I feel more comfortable using an app again.

But if you got one because of the design, where is the photo of it?? I wanna seeee :D Show us!, please _

Wow, to use such a small notebook for calendar and project planning sounds like a challenge. Would it be a timeline/agenda style of planning?

Yes, at the moment it’s the two (at that size). The one I use to track my workout is in use for a few years already (but I had some breaks here an there) and it’s about half full by now.
Tracking with my phone does not really work for me. I usually leave it in the locker anyway. (Which means I am one of weird ones who do not listen to music :D)

But if you got one because of the design, where is the photo of it?? I wanna seeee :D Show us!, please

That’s fair. Here you go :D
It’s a paperblanks. I saw it at the little shop at the train station.

Yeah, I am not entirely sure how I want to use it. But probably more like a timeline. To keep track of important dates, appointments, deadlines, todos and such. But i have not come up with a good way to do it.
And regarding the calender layout, i just tried the weekly spread I used for my bulletjournal back then and…i think it would actually work…

          That is really pretty! Wow!

It looks way more spacious than I through it would be, neat! I mean it’s not a lot of space, but seems to be just enough.

If you need more space you can always rotate it, doubling the size :)

Nice creation! My smallest is a credit card sized notebook.

I recently came across the Touch and Flow Jotter notebook and decided to make something similar. I usually carry folded loose paper in my wallet so I decided to make one small enough to fit.

I used some graph paper from a notebook I’ve had for a while and some black cardstock. This one has 32 pages for quick notes. I might buy some nice patterned cardstock to emulate the Touch and Flow notebooks for the next ones I make.

oooh very neat! And nice paper, I used to have a notebook with that type of paper. It makes it so much easier to read on. I love that it fits in your wallet!

There are a lot of nice scrap-booking paper you could use, some even have structure. But they’re not very thick so you’d have to glue it to something sturdier :) The cardstock I have are from the cover of a regular notebook, that could work as well, but maybe not as fun.

A while back I saw a small second hand Filofax wallet similar to the image below, it feels a bit clumsy with the rings, but it makes me feel inspired to make something similar myself.

Thanks! The graph paper is from a notebook I never used because the paper itself felt too fancy haha. I’ve had it for too long and decided to make smaller ones just so I could actually use it. I also made two 5"x6.5" notebooks with it.

That wallet notebook you posted reminds me of the Mini 5 from Plotter.

You can probably turn that one into a wallet with inserts.

I was looking at origami paper for the notebook covers but in need to check the weight. My local craft store has an isle of scrapbooking paper so I’ll probably be able to find something that works.

This is the notebook that inspired my tiny one.

Is a Filofax a notebook brand, a notebook that has rings or a specific notebook method? Also I noticed that your notebooks are not bound with anything? They are loose and held in place by the band? I also like the cover paper you used for yours.

oh, the Mini 5 from Plotter is pretty too!

The notebooks for your inspiration are really pretty as well! I’ll look forward to see what nice papers you find, I hope you’ll post it here in Pen & Paper :)

Filofax is a brand, yes. But it has also become the name for a notebook/calendar with rings. Similar to how Lypsyl means lip balm (at least in Scandinavia). But Filofax is a ‘ring-bound system planner’. The style of notebook can also be called ring-bound planner, ring-bound notebook, ring-bound system notebook and so on.

A similar type of notebook are made with discs instead → https://photon.lemmy.world/post/lemmy.world/40458204

My notebooks are not bound, no. Only the piece of rubber-string is holding it in place, this is so I can use it as both A6 and A7 papers. But the A6 only works from the middle haha. I find A7 to be too small for most use-cases. So when I’m done with a page I move it to the back of the notebook for storage.

And thanks! The cover makes it much easier to write, the leather is way to soft to write on
