    Why does The Empire still exist? Its a relic of the bargain struck between Akatosh and mortals . . . a deal broken by Akatosh when he killed Martin Septim during The Oblivion Crisis. Emperor Uriel Septim VII was the last one to rule through divine right. By the time Alduin returns, the Empire has become a purely secular failed state that can’t guard its own borders.

    If the Thalmor weren’t trying to blow up the world, the Empire would probably have crumbled under the weigh of its own corruption and irrelevance.

      Well, the dynasty of the Septims may be over, but that’s not mean the idea of a unified empire has, civilization usually take long to really crumble and disapear.

      althrough if the nations like Hammerfell, Skyrim and many other could put aside their differences (highly doubt thet would o for long, it Elder Scrolls, racism is basically the lore) or the empire itself could sustain the anti-thalmor feeling they may have a chance to do something simmilar to the Ayleid defeat.

      This is what i probably would expect from a sequel from Skyrim in narrative
