Posts and pictures may not upload correctly, or at all, or maybe magically appear after seeming to not upload. Comments may also duplicate. We will tidy house once we get some stability back after the recent update to 0.18.1 and increased user load. Thank you for trying to continue to upload images for the community.

Yes, upvoting has been one of the issues I have experienced on both mobile and desktop. Funny enough, your comment duplicated.

Their comment also duplicated over here via federation. But I’ve also seen entire posts duplicated and of course posts without pictures (despite being on the original instance). So I think it’s quite busy all round right now, causing much weirdness.

writing a completeggg proper backend for the whole Lemmy fediverse would be the best way to help. waiting a bit and being understanding of outages, bugs etc would be the second best way.

Took me quite a few attempts to get mine up and in-between had to check if it had gone up without me knowing.

All teething problems though, all great signs

One way to lighten the load on servers is to host your images externally. You can still embed the images into your post and nobody will be able to see the difference on first glance. The markdown to embed is: ![Alttext](Linktopicture.tld/picturename.filetype

Alttext is optional but encouraged. If you don’t want to use it keep the first set of brackets [] empty

Here is an example of how to use this:

The code ![Picture of a dune I embedded from Unsplas](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1688164987143-3938a38cf69c?ixlib=rb-4.0.3&ixid=M3wxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8fA%3D%3D&auto=format&fit=crop&w=2071&q=80) produces: Picture of a dune I embedded from Unsplas

(I’ve taken a random picture from Unsplash for this. It doesn’t mean anything more

Lies, this is obviously guerilla marketing for Dune part 2.

Do you have an image hoster that you recommend? Imgur was popular but I thought they made some changes to what can be done without an account.

For a free service that’s hosted by a non-profit, I really don’t mind the site’s mediocre performance. It’s to be expected. Keep up the good work!

Yes, Ruud is doing a kickass job that I definitely could not be doing right now. We will get there. I just wanted to make people aware that it is happening and it is not something a member is doing in their end.

Thanks to any and everyone involved in putting out these server fires. It sucks, and it’s often a thankless job. Keep up the good work, but don’t kill yourself trying to solve all problems at once :)

Growing pains happen and I’m happy to be here to experience the growth of a (hopefully) new successful community! I honestly love all the updates bc it just means that there are real people here who care about the user experience and growing the overarching lemmy experience.

For real! I hope the devs and everyone else involved know that growing pains are fine and totally acceptable. I know I’m not upset in the slightest - if anything it’s more fun because some stuff might be broken or there’s more posts to read about how the update didn’t work entirely or broke something else. It’s kinda fascinating to me as someone who knows very little when it comes to servers and hosting and whatnot.

I don’t think it’s Lemmy as a whole - probably just lemmy.world right now. I haven’t been having any such issues today on lemmy.ca. We really ought to encourage people to join smaller servers to spread the load out more evenly. That’s the wonder of Lemmy - when one server is struggling the others can still work.

My question is, what happens when you try to interact with subscriptions that are located on the overloaded server? Those will still crap out, right?

I switched to a different instance since World is lagging too hard. I have no lag and can access all posts on World with no loading issues and no lag time when loading World posts or communities.

I recommend you find an instance that’s near where you live to minimize server ping.

Edit: I can upvote super fast without having to wait either.

You are all doing the best you can and the fact that World hasn’t melted down into magma is a testimony to your great work.

Thankyou from all of us who are users on your instance.

Regardless of the problems this platform may have right now, I will support Lemmy. I like the fact that here is open source and that this platform cannot be undermined due to corporate greed.

What lemmy devs need to do is to allow database sharding. Instead of 1 postgres, allow specifying an arbitrary number and shard by community or, maybe, even post ID.

I’d just like to remind everyone that lemmy.world is not Lemmy. Lemmy is not having any load issues at all - that’s one of the advantages of federation. Some instances are having load issues, and I’m sure most of them will sort it out soon.
