If this kills Electron web apps, Node apps that suck in gigabytes of redundant modules and other profligate and sloppy coding practices, who’s to say it was entirely a bad thing?
Why would you use a euphemism like “running out” in the title?
It’s not running out, it’s being hoarded for stupid reasons.
It’s kind of both. Manufacturers claiming they are going to stop making it causing a crisis before they have even stopped making it is collusion. Most of these companies have already been hit with collusion charges for lcd screens, hard drive pricing etc. the demand is there but it’s more profitable to lower supply, charge more and save on all the overhead.
Now throw in the black hole that is the current AI craze and it’s even more suspect.
Yes, RAM was cheap. Yes, RAM is fast. Yes, assets are bigger because 4K. But if you load a 1MB executable and a 100MB executable into RAM, one will be faster and it doesn’t take a computer scientist to tell you which one.
I hesitate to call it lazy programming because it’s really just business pushing for the wrong results. The old chestnut of fast/good/cheap.
The size tells me nothing. Smaller isn’t necessarily better, even if it is more efficient. Which smaller doesn’t mean either.
