      Ya know.

      As a non native.

I could give a flying fuck what kind of economic hardship honouring the treaties my ancestors signed.

Give them half of Toronto for all I fucking care.

Actions have consequences and if our government is to have any moral legitimacy we need to do what we say we’ll do. Even if our ancestors said it.

I also love the idea of a bunch of rich developers getting fucked sideways on their investments but that’s just me.

For this claim, the Gov of BC says they will back $150 million in loan guarantees. There was a $35 mil industrial compound under development which lost its funding from a traditional lender, so thats part of it. The rest is for mortgage holders of homes who may be affected, and et al, I don’t have all the details. The story is developing.

Ok…so, first of all…this article is spouting nothing but hyperbolic bullshit. No one’s private land ownership is being challenged, or infringed upon with this decision, whether in this specific case, or in any broader sense.

The most that the Cowichan Tribe is asking for, is fair compensation for the land that was stolen from them, and recognition of their claim to the land that is still “publicly owned”. No one is “coming for privately owned land”.

For the record, I completely disagree with the framing in the article. I think this is an excellent decision by the court and I hope that sets a precedent for more land reconciliation.

That source helps, thank you. Explains a good amount from sound legal context without being too alarmist.
