The measles outbreak in South Carolina is “accelerating” with no end in sight following Thanksgiving and other large gatherings, state health officials said Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, 111 measles cases had been reported in what’s known as upstate South Carolina — an area in the northwest of the state that includes Greenville and Spartanburg.

“We are faced with ongoing transmission that we anticipate will go on for many more weeks,” Dr. Linda Bell, state epidemiologist for the South Carolina Department of Public Health, said during a news briefing Wednesday.

If only there was a way to stop people from catching this disease. Maybe something that doesn’t involve quarantine or social distancing. Maybe something invented 62 years ago. if only there was a way…

Unfortunately these kinds of things has a tendency to affect all of us. Herd immunity is important.

Everyone should get the vaccine, but not everyone gains total immunity from it. It’s literally why vaccines are only really effective if everyone gets it, so that people who don’t gain immunity or those who are immuno-compromised are also protected.

So in this situation people who got the vaccine can still catch the illness and possibly transmit it to others. So plenty of people in the US still deserve our compassion.

When the herd doesn’t vaccinate you loose herd immunity. So yeah… USA problem.

An incredibly stupid take, since disease doesn’t care about borders. It is the problem of all of us.

If the US doesn’t vaccinate properly, it is going to affect the rest of the world. The US doesn’t exist in a vacuum when it comes to these kinds of things. Diseases don’t really respect borders.
