Z-Wave comes in two flavors, classic and long range. They are fully encrypted. They are fully compatible because each product goes through certification that assures that each Z-Wave product interacts with every other Z-Wave product within its category. Z-Wave Long Range can get up to a mile and a half on a battery-operated device. And I’m not talking about a car battery. I’m talking about little coin-sized lithium cells. Z-Wave Classic is a huge mesh network. It’s got repeaters. It performs like a large infrastructure. These protocols present great opportunities for companies looking to develop connected devices in an open standard, but one that gives them the ability to go long range, fully encrypted, battery-operated, and mains-operated devices interoperable with an entire ecosystem of products. It’s difficult to find a contrasting protocol with as broad and as deep a roster as Z-Wave.
